The Klamath-Siskiyou region of southwest Oregon and northwest California contains more federally-recognized Wild & Scenic Rivers and waterways than any other area across the continental United States. Most recently, more than 140 miles of streams and tributaries to the Wild & Scenic Rogue and Elk Rivers were added to the national system in 2019 with the passage of the John R Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act!
Currently, KS Wild is working with partners and leaders across the state to pass Senator Wyden’s River Democracy Act. The Senator’s bill (S. 192) would expand protections for Wild & Scenic waterways to more than 4,000 river/stream miles, with roughly one quarter of the proposed designations located in SW Oregon’s Siskiyou region. The River Democracy Act would provide additional protections for drinking water and salmon/steelhead habitat in the upper reaches of the Illinois River headwaters, as well as other watersheds like the Rogue, Applegate, Chetco and Winchuck Rivers.
