Connecting with Community in the Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion
Nestled at the convergence of the Klamath, Siskiyou, and Cascade mountains lies a region not only rich in its incomparable biodiversity but also in its vibrant and resilient communities. The Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion (KS), with its rugged mountains, ancient forests, and rich ecosystems, is home to a tapestry of people who are deeply connected to the land and to each other. As we discuss action for change in the KS, it’s important to recognize the power of community that sustains and enhances this unique region outside of KS Wild too.
From the coastal town of Crescent City to the inland communities of Mt Shasta, Ashland, and beyond, the region is marked by a variety of passions and ways of life. Indigenous tribes such as the Karuk, Yurok, and Hupa have long stewarded these lands, embodying a profound understanding of the natural world and its rhythms. Their traditions and knowledge continue to influence conservation practices and foster a deep respect for the environment. In addition to the Indigenous communities, the region has attracted a wide array of people from different backgrounds, all drawn by the area’s natural beauty and unique lifestyle.
One of the most compelling aspects of the KS is the way in which local communities come together to address challenges. This collective spirit is evident in a multitude of grassroots initiatives and collaborative projects many of us have watched evolve in our lifetimes.
The region is home to numerous groups addressing various challenges facing communities and the environment. Whether they are advocating for sustainable practices, promoting conservation efforts, or fostering community resilience, these folks are committed to making a positive difference here in the KS. We hope to connect you with the communities and organizations that speak most deeply to you.
