Lawless Logging of Public Lands: Stop the Westerman Bill!

Extremists In Congress Want Lawless Logging of Public Lands.

Together, We Must Stop the Westerman Bill.

They call it HR 2936, or the Federal Forest Resiliency Act of 2017, or the Westerman bill. But let's just call it what it is: Logging Without Laws.

KS Wild has been stopping illegal logging on public lands for 20 years. But what if Congress just took away our bedrock environmental laws? That’s what the Westerman bill is trying to do to public lands and it is no exaggeration to say that it would utterly destroy the forests, rivers, and wildlife of the Klamath-Siskiyou. We are particularly worried about some of the proposed:

  • Logging up to 30,000 acres without environmental review!
  • Protection for threatened species like Pacific salmon becomes optional!
  • Courts aren't allowed to stop illegal logging until forests are already cut down!
  • This would happen on every National Forest in the whole country!

If that wasn't enough, the bill does even worse in southwest Oregon's backyard forests. Almost three million acres of Western Oregon's BLM forest are singled out for a special giveaway to timber barons. Even lands protected as Wilderness or National Monuments could be clearcut!

And in case you think we are crying wolf, this bill has already passed out of committee, newspapers are ignoring it, and there's reason to worry that some Democrats in Congress might be looking for a deal.

A deal?!! It is not too late to tell Congress: No Deal on Lawless Logging! No Sacrifice of Clean Water, Wild Forests, or Endangered Wildlife!
