Oregon Wilderness Coalition
KS Wild participates as a Steering Committee member in the Oregon Wilderness Coalition, seeking to protect Oregon's forested roadless areas as designated Wilderness. Currently our focus is on the Siskiyou Crest and Wild Rogue roadless areas, but many wild treasures around the state deserve this protection. Dozens of conservation organizations representing thousands of Oregonians have banded together in a statewide effort to protect these special areas.
Of Oregon's 16 million acres of National Forest, only 13% are protected as Wilderness. Approximately five million additional acres remain wilderness-suitable, yet unprotected from logging, road building, and other human development. The Oregon Wilderness Coalition seeks permanent Wilderness protection for Oregon's public forest roadless areas 1,000 acres and larger. The Coalition also works to provide ecosystem restoration of public lands adjacent to core wilderness areas in order to heal damaged watersheds and support wilderness values.
