Heavy rains flush sewage to river

Heavy rains Monday night created a surge of rainwater for the cities of Coquille and Myrtle Point, prompting them to bypass raw sewage and stormwater into the Coquille River.

The Myrtle Point and Coquille sewage treatment plants do not have the capacity to treat the excess water. The bypass is continuing until the rain lets up, a press release said.

The cities notified the Oregon Emergency Response System and Department of Environmental Quality and signs remain posted to warn river users.

For more information, call John Higgins in Coquille at 541-396-2115, ext. 209; or Randy Whobrey in Myrtle Point at 541-572-2626.
