County administrators: Gold Ray Dam should come out

Jackson County's top administrators this morning endorsed removal of Gold Ray Dam from the Rogue River just north of Central Point, finding it the least problematic option for the county.

"The liability of keeping it far outweighs the liability of removing it," County Administrator Danny Jordan said.

He told Jackson County commissioners the county may be faced with legal challenges with either decision it makes.

Jordan and John Vial, county roads director, both said they would recommend the dam's removal.

Vial said he is opposed to dam removal in general, but after weighing the liabilities of keeping Gold Ray or demolishing it, he found the evidence strongly supports removal.

The administrators' recommendation will be weighed by commissioners as part of a complicated process that involves numerous regulatory agencies.
