Botanical Area Urgently Needs Your Help!

Hinkle Lake

The Hinkle Lake Botanical Area is a special place. This wet meadow habitat on the north side of the Siskiyou Crest is a botanical wonderland comprised of rare high elevation serpentine species near the edge of their range. But where most people see irreplaceable botanical treasures, a few selfish off-road vehicle enthusiasts see only a place to spin their tires.

For the past 5 years the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest has been trying unsuccessfully to stop off-road vehicle damage to the meadows. Botanical Area signs have been torn down, a gate limiting vehicle access has been repeatedly vandalized, and recent off road vehicle mud bogging in the Botanical Area has damaged both the hydrological and botanical values of the meadows.

The Forest Service is asking for your ideas and your help in figuring out what to do about the ongoing damage to the Hinkle Lake Botanical Area.

Please take a moment to send an email to the Forest Service with common sense suggestions for how to protect this botanical gem. And please consider making a commitment to regularly visit the Hinkle Lake Botanical Area so that it becomes known for hiking and botanizing rather than for mud bogging, please email gs@kswild.org to help.
