User-created OHV trails can harm soil and water resources. Picture here is a recently thinned
Medford BLM timber sale.
Off Road Vehicles (ORVs) can be a fun way to
explore public lands, but there are some fragile wildlands where ORV
use results in irreparable ecological damage. Nationwide the Forest
Service is beginning the long-overdue process of designating where ORV
use is allowed, and where it must be restricted in order to protect
sensitive areas. KS Wild is participating in that designation process
by encouraging local National Forests to protect rare plant species,
sensitive wildlands and riparian areas while allowing ORV use on many
existing logging roads and motorized trails. This is an historic
opportunity to close harmful roads and finally designate appropriate
places for motorized recreation, and we encourage your particiaption.
The Rogue River/Siskiyou National Forest recently embarked on its "OHV Route Inventory and Designation Process" for nearly 1.8 million acres of public forest. A public commenting process will begin in late 2007. It is very important that people communicate their thoughts and concerns throughout this process, otherwise OHV lobby groups will heavily influence the process without a balance from public land users who enjoy clean streams, fragile botanical resources and quietude.
KS Wild is closely engaged with this process for the Rogue River/Siskiyou, Six Rivers and Klamath National Forests throughout the region, so stay tuned for more information and action items as they arise.
Consider attending an open house for the public on June 7 in Gold Beach or June 20 in Myrtle Point for the Rogue River/Siskiyou National Forest.
